Fantasy is not a genre that I tend to read a lot and I did struggle with this initially because there was such a vast sweeping world/set of characters to get my head around.
However I was glad I stuck with it because Raybearer really did have a bit of everything in it.
Tarisai lives in isolation, having been abandoned by her mother - the mysterious "Lady". However as she nears her teens The Lady sends her to the central kingdom, having shown her a picture of a boy she must kill.
She soon realises that the boy, Dayo, is the future emperor and that The Lady expects her to win his trust and become a member of his 12 strong council. She aims to completely change the ruling classes but why? Who is The Lady and how is she connected to the emperor?
Full of twists, turns, magical kingdoms and characters this really is a sweeping novel. It ends on a knife edge which means you immediately want to read what comes next.
