This book is truly unique. It has raised the bar for all YA fantasy novels. AND it's a debut?! Jordan Ifueko writing is masterful and I congratulate her on writing such a wonderful book and I am very excited to read a second book and all future books she writes!
Tarisai, as a character, is strong, independent and powerful. That said, it is not something she knows herself. Although I did get the impression that these inner characteristics really shone through. Wanting to fit in, wanting a long lasting family, Tarisai appears to willing join in the traditions of the palace. However, it cannot be as it seems due to her own mother's want for power and her sneaky plots to overthrow the empire's royals.
The book discusses true friendships, true found families, and the power of song, chants and overall, storytelling. I 100% recommend this book!
