What an amazing debut novel from Jordan Ifueko. From the outset I was drawn into the vivid and colourful world that the characters inhabit. It had all the aspects I look for in a YA fantasy adventure, magic, powers, the afterworld, family secrets and curses.
This book is so engaging I really hope there is another book and it will be a series. All of the characters are so well written especially Tarisai who I really loved and is a fantastic strong female protagonist. The world is so immersive the book would be enjoyed by fans of the Hunger Games, Harry Potter and the Greek Myths. It deals sensitively with themes of colonialism, war, power, empires and sacrifice. There is some violence but it is integral to the plot, Id say perfect for age 12 onwards.
