This was so perfect to read around Halloween and the first few days of November. The spooky vibes and chaotic monsters were great.

Regarding the plot, I found similarities to Harry Potter (a poor, ordinary boy is introduced to a magical world and learns he has a big enemy and famous parents) and the Divergent series (the trials and confrontations Rayleigh finds himself having throughout the book.
Although these tropes are sometimes a little overdone, they did a good job at keeping me engaged and entertained here. If you like similar tropes then this is one to look out for.

I found the writing style a little clunky at times which made it difficult to read in large amounts at one time, but I’m glad I persevered since it picked up by the midway point. I think that’s because I’d gotten to know the main characters more and so became more invested (particularly Thelonius!)
