This book is set in an alternate or future world where all citizens must stick to a curfew, supposedly to combat climate change. We soon learn this is not exactly the truth.

When we meet Rayleigh Mann his main concern is getting home quickly on his bike, on Halloween, to intercept a phone call to his family about his detention. His other main worries are his trainers and keeping his hair nice - then, when he gets where he's going, he gets something a lot more serious to worry about. Read this if you like stories about bad boys, trying their best!

As the story progresses we find out that Rayleigh has to find his father but who knows where he is and who will help Rayleigh to find him. This is a family drama with great monsters.

Rayleigh is from London and there are a few jokes about London people in here.

Funny, intelligent writing; Rayleigh is twelve, but this could be a story for any high school pupil.

Some of the bits I like are:

'Fidgeting from one foot to the other, as trick-or-treaters blustered past with fat sacks of spoils, Rayleigh scanned the costumed crowd for his friends'

and

'Tonight, the city was steeped in gold beneath a glowing sunset, but darkness waited in the wings'
