Interesting concept - but confusing

The premise of this book is an interesting concept - there is a world of monsters in "Below London" whilst in London itself we have a very dystopian life (it reminds me a little of the film Monsters Inc).
Our main character, Rayleigh Mann, lives in "normal" London. He's a cheeky, always getting into trouble, kind of boy. One Halloween he goes out and is kidnapped and taken underground. Unbeknownst to him, his father is Bogey Mann, the ultimate scarer of Below London. However Bogey has gone missing and he's welcomed by his uncle, Thelonius, instead.
Rayleigh has come of age and it's time to see if he has what it takes to stay in Below London and become a monster. He has to past some tests to prove hi worthiness but is more interested in finding his dad.
The concept is great but there was something about the style of writing that I found confusing and I found it difficult to maintain focus. Maybe it was the American vocabulary when the book was set in London or just that I couldn't get my head around the multiple characters.
