The main character in this story is a twelve year old boy named Rayleigh Mann. He lives in a high rise flat in London with his mum and his nan. Rayleigh has never known his father although his mother assures him that his dad has not left them, but he has been away working for twelve years. There is a photo of his dad in their flat.
Rayleigh is known to be a bit of a naughty boy and he is always in detention at school. While in detention with the other naughty kids he make friends with a group of troublemakers. On Halloween this group of kids decide that they will go out trick or treating. Rayleigh plans to go with them but then he decided that his new `friends' maybe were not to be trusted, He decides to go out alone, and this is when his life changes.
Before he sets off ,he finds a letter that his mother has written to him. It tells him that his Halloween gift has been in the making for twelve years.
