Ok so I heard a lot about this book on bookstagram a couple of months ago and was intrigued by the whole rewind, play, pause concept it has going on.

The book opens with a violent, grisly murder scene and we know who’s been killed, our main character Natalie. What we don’t know is who killed her and why!

So we rewind back. Back to the beginning where famous Instagram influencer Natalie’s story is played through to find out what happened previously to lead to her being killed one night in a holiday cottage in the back of beyond.

We also pause and have different points of view from other characters, reporter Audrey, holiday cottage manager Andrew and mysterious character Jennifer.

I have to say I guessed Jennifer’s story pretty quickly (by page 100) and by the end I was proved right although there was more to it than I had previously thought. Andrew the creepy Norman Bates like holiday cottage manager turns out to be a right weirdo. Reporter Audrey was probably my favourite character, a journalist trying to work her way up and clutching on to the story of Natalie’s disappearance in the hope that it will be her big break.

For the first 100 pages or so I struggled to get into the book a little bit. I think by knowing Natalie is killed from the first chapter it kind of stopped me getting too invested into her story. I felt like we were being introduced to character after character and the timeline was jumping around all over the place. When I got to Sergeant Seanie’s first chapter I actually rolled my eyes at being introduced to yet another character's point of view and actually I can’t really see why so many words were wasted on his relationship situation as it turned out to be totally irrelevant.

So I wasn’t that into it, but I will never DNF a thriller because the curiosity will haunt me for the rest of my days. And I’m glad I stuck with it because from around the 200 page mark I was glued to it!

There are lots of reveals and this book turns down a very dark path, something I was not expecting at all and quite frankly turned my stomach. There are some horrific characters and situations in this book. The action picks up towards the end and I actually really enjoyed the ending. Everything was tied up, explained and answered which is always my preference over an open ending.

This book opens with an action packed intro, slows down a bit but picks up the pace towards the end and boy does it get intense. If you ignore the confusingly numbered chapters (I got bogged down in this for the first few chapters and I think that contributed towards my disinterest in the book) then it's actually a really intense, dark, gripping thriller
