An occasionally thrilling thriller

Rewind is a murder mystery with hidden cameras at its core – hence the title. It’s an easy read, although not as clever as it thinks it is – I guessed the ‘twist’, and the murderer, about a third of the way in which ruined the suspense somewhat.

Some of the characterisation is odd – for example we’re given lots of irrelevant back story for some characters which adds nothing to the story, then none for others which actually would. I think the author also missed a trick with the Instagram angle – there’s some interesting social commentary to be made here on the nature of cameras in our lives today, but the book fails to take this anywhere. On the good side, settings are well written though – I could imagine the cottages of Shanamore and the village itself.

This book would make a good holiday read as it’s very easy to read. But if you’re looking for something that’ll make you gasp with shocking twists, this definitely isn’t it, despite what it might say on the cover.
