REWIND: a masterfully unsettling psychological thriller to remember!
⠀⠀
‘This is an explosive story about a murder caught on camera. You’ve already missed the start. To get the full picture you must rewind the tape and play it through to the end, no matter how shocking...’
⠀⠀
From the very beginning, the book is fast-paced and an enthralling read including how it begins: Andrew, the manager of Shanamore Cottages watching a guest being murdered!
⠀⠀
The premise is inspired, and this alongside chapters that regularly switch between pause, rewind and fast-forward helped keep a high level of tension and suspicion throughout the book. There were also timings on the chapters and whilst I raced through the chapters eagerly in search of answers, on reflection I have since wondered if there was any further significance.
⠀⠀
The story is cleverly written and whilst I had my suspicions and had guessed the perpetrator, the way the book is put together meant that I had by no means connected ALL the dots and was fully invested in the book as I wanted to know reasoning and more details. Likewise, Howard’s vast array of incredibly creepy and peculiar characters, without a doubt contributed hugely to the development of the story, suspense and overall mystery of this book and satisfied my thirst for memorable, high-quality characterisation, something that I always look for in a great read. I organised a read along for this book and the early theories for some of the characters were really interesting- everyone regarded the characters as a contributing factor to the overall enjoyment of the book. As with all good thrillers, the setting didn’t disappoint and the writing provided the reader with vivid imagery; it’s no surprise as a reader you got sucked into the pages.
⠀⠀
If you love a good thriller, then this is one not to miss!
