Meet Jazzy – she’s a girl who likes to play hard with her gang of friends. Once of her friends, though, recently got married to the wrong sort of man. A portrait of a fascinating young woman, and her vibrant city of Singapore, it’s written in Singlish, which adds a really authentic touch. It sounds like a light, bright and sparkling read, but this is a much more complex book than it seems. There’s a great deal of acerbic social analysis and barbed humour that makes it a really interesting read. How do you find yourself when you have very few choices in life? And what effects to class and gender have on us all? The points can be made in a slightly over-forceful way (we get it, we get it), but they are uncomfortable truths that we need to recognise.
