It sounds like a light, bright and sparkling read, but this is a much more complex book than it seems. There’s a great deal of acerbic social analysis and barbed humour that makes it a really interesting read. How do you find yourself when you have very few choices in life? And what effects to class and gender have on us all? The points can be made in a slightly over-forceful way (we get it, we get it), but they are uncomfortable truths that we need to recognise.
