After spending a year living and travelling around south east Asia this book gave me such a strong feeling of nostalgia! I felt like I knew all these characters so well the “ang moh’s” the “SPG’s” but especially the “ah beng’s” I had such a vivid image of those guys that every time they were mentioned I laughed out loud!
What started out as a funny, lighthearted book about a group of friends going out partying and trying to find a western husband, soon became quite heartbreaking and tragic! It really shone a light on the dark, sleazy underbelly of society and women’s place in it (especially in Asia) but let’s face it this s**t happens all over the world!
Jazzy is such a great character, she’s funny, clever, ambitious and sometimes a bit foolish but takes everything in her stride! This book is written in Singlish which I honestly thought I was going to struggle with but it’s written so well that you can understand exactly what she’s saying even if you don’t know the words!
