I really wanted to like this book. It's not my usual choice of story line or vibe, so when I read the first impression I was unsure but hopeful - I'm always open to new voices!

The cover is certainly eye catching in, I would say, a loud and gaudy way - not automatically a bad thing mind! and reminiscent of my holidays in Thailand. Same same but different!

This story is set in Singapore and written as though spoken (not dissimilar to The Colour Purple), and including slang and sounds native to the protagonist's country and culture. This makes it very authentic and as if Jazzy is actually talking to you as you read. I could hear myself saying the 'lah' at the end of statements in my head! I'm pretty sure I almost said it out loud myself in everyday conversation!

The premise is made quite clear early on; late twenties Asian women on the search for white men - specifically - to marry. As I said in my first impression review, this could be a recipe for humour, disaster and success! and my was it all of the above. Although the ending showed Jazzy in a slightly different light and her character development progressed throughout the story, I still couldn't persuade myself to like her. I found her very materialistic and that's just not my thing. In fact I didn't really connect with any of the characters at all, and so felt no emotional attachment to it.

I read this book quite quickly; finding myself skimming large chunks of pages as I went. Not so much because I was in a hurry to find out what was going to happen, but because I wanted to get past the 'internal babble' of what was in Jazzy's head, and also because - I know this sounds cruel - I wanted to get on and read other books in my pile... Now I feel guilty for saying that! but I think it fair to be honest - and I know that although this wasn't for me, it'll definitely be someones else's cup of tea.

Thank you to Readers First who sent me this product in return for an honest review.
