I had never read a book on this sort of subject before and I think it would worry me a lot if I had a child going off on a gap year.
I felt really sorry for her parents and I think Cassy was a bit too easy led and her boyfriend whom she left England with was a bit of a wimp to just let her go. Without saying spoilers it's a story of Cassy leaving her family to go off backpacking and the last they hear her say is "see you in September". Once in New Zealand she has relationship problems and is picked up in a van by a group of people who live on this supposibly idyllic island and they are told what to do in every aspect of everyday life by the leader Justin, this is a classic case of cult communities which you used to hear about years ago. This is the first book I have read by Charity Norman and I really enjoyed and it had me gripped from the beginning.
