This book gripped me from the moment I picked it up. Cassy Howells jets off to New Zealand with her boyfriend, planning a Summer spent travelling around the country. She leaves her family with a breezy 'See You in September' and, from that point onwards sets off on a journey very different to he one any of the people waving goodbye at Heathrow Airport envisaged.
Cassy is an idealistic, slightly naive young woman who is at a crossroads in her life. Struggling with the idea of a final year at university then shaken by events she is easily subsumed into the cult when she happens to meet them hitchhiking.
Every character in the book is relatable and real. Cassy's choices, and their impact upon her family and herself are beautifully described, sometimes heart wrenchingly so. Norman weaves a web which shows how easily even seemingly intelligent people can be seduced by charismatic individuals.
After starting to read this novel it became clear to me that I wouldn't be able to rest until I'd finished. The story stayed with me and a sense of foreboding underlies the whole book which left me unable to put it down.
This was my first Charity Norman novel but it definitely won't be my last. See You in September is an excellent read which explores human interaction, and how easily it can be manipulated, to the fullest. Recommended.
