This book is like nothing I have ever read in my life.

Lina suffers a stroke, leaving her blind and completely dependent on those around her.

The vocabulary and the words are exquisite. Meruane knows how to depict how she’s thinking and feeling, and the familiar yet now alien environment to her with her lost sight.

She compassionately shows that those who suffer with serious illness/affliction are still very much human with very human needs and wants.

Whilst some of the story may be shocking for some given her situation, how else would one want to conduct their life other than seeking any form of normalcy/intimacy in a new version of the world?

This book is painful to read and brutal, yet it feels that’s how it should be. There is no sugar coating in this story. But being autobiographical she has literally walked this path and earned the right to tell it in all its glory (warts and all).

The translation at times is a little off and as such it can make the reading a little stilted. Just in terms of the grammar and the punctuation. However the story itself shines through.

I would like to thank Readers First for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
