Kellen has escaped the lands of his Jan'Tep people and is now an outlaw trying to keep away from anyone who may let the Mages know where he is. Struggling to keep safe in the Borderlands he purchases a charm that will let him use his Spellslinger talents without the Hextrackers finding him. Unfortunately, the trader dupes him so Reichis, the squirrel cat (yes honestly), is helping him to break in and reclaim what he paid for. In true Kellen style it all goes disastrously wrong and he has to rely, yet again, on the enigmatic Ferius Parfax to save his hide.

Having read the first installment of this series very recently I am loving the first few pages on this second book. Reichis is such a fun character and somehow I am pretty sure his personality traits are pretty close to every cat I've had the pleasure of encountering - kill it, eat it or steal it. Ferius is here again in all her cussed grandeur and I am hoping that we find out something more about her history in this book.

Sebastian De Castell writes with a wit and humour that really brings this fantasy world to vivid life. Although written for the teen market it looks as though Shadowblack takes directly up from Spellslinger in being simply a great fantasy tale that you should not deny yourself just because you are past the age of majority.
