Shadowblack, picks up the story few months after Kellen's exile from his home town. On the run from Jan'tep mages seeking the bounty on his head, Kellen sees that a life on the road isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Not only has he failed to become a mage, he is finding it increasingly hard to grasp being a spellslinger. He thought his life couldn't get any worse but when he finds a girl cursed with the shadowblack, Ferius, his familiar Reichis and himself are thrown yet again into a world of deceit, murder and family secrets....
Usually, it always the sequel to anything be it movie, tv series or book series that falls short of the expectations that the first laid out. However, Shadowblack does not disappoint in delivering an action-packed book full of magic and leaving the reader wanting more. Sebastian De Castell has somehow managed to retain the power of mystery and magic that the first book has to offer, yet still make the sequel independent of the first book in its own right.
