Any book that features a squirrel cat has to be good, right?

I've had this in my TBR pile for quite a while. Whilst I love the cover I wasn't necessarily sure it would be my "thing".
It's the second book in the Spellslinger series and I wish I'd read the first before embarking upon this episode.
The book was one of two halves for me - I found the first half a bit of a struggle (in a large part, I think, because I hadn't read it's predecessor). Trying to get a grip on the characters was hard work and not a lot seemed to be happening. If it weren't for the fascinating character of a Squirrel Cat called Reichis I may have given up.
However, it was worth sticking with. In the end this was an enjoyable old fashioned tale of good versus evil. However, the ongoing mystery is to determine who the "godfathers" of evil are behind the villain uncovered in this book.
With mystery, spells, friendship, death, a bit of a love interest and that awesome Squirrel Cat it's got a bit of everything. If this sounds like your kind of thing make sure you read the series from the very start though!
