Picking up where book one, Spellslinger, ended, Kellen is on the road with his friend Ferius Parfax and his squirrel cat sidekick, Reichis. Someone in his Jan'Tep clan has put a bounty on his head and now anyone could be an assassin sent to kill him. People fear his Shadowblack curse and Kellen himself is beginning to wonder if he'll be able to control it forever.
As Kellen and Ferius fight off one such attack, they meet Seneira. Her people are not Jan'Tep and yet they too are under threat from a Shadowblack plague. In helping her Kellen hopes to learn how to cure his own condition.
As with most series, now that the main world building has been sorted with book one, the story takes precedence here. Kellen as a character is a lot more developed and I can see now how the story is building on the blocks set up in the first book. A great follow up and I can't wait for the next!
