This is the second book in the Spellslinger series and as I loved the first book, I was not going to hesitate at reading this one as soon as possible. It starts of straight away with some action, as the protagonists, Reichis the squirrel cat and Kellen the self-professed Spellslinger, are right in the middle of a heist!

Those two pull off a kind of buddy cop vibe with lots of conflict mixed in with the camaraderie of outlaws on the run. Of course this is not unexpected when one of the two is a homicidal squirrel whose favourite food is human eyeballs and the other is a failed mage, cursed, and a human. With eyeballs. The third member of their group is Ferius Prafax, a card wielding Argosi who is teaching Kellen how to survive as an outcast. Together these three clearly make a very enjoyable team to follow and root for.

It is evident that Sebastien de Castell had lots of fun writing this, with the enjoyment bleeding through into the characters personalities and the pages of the book. The writing flows and is easy to read, the banter between characters is excellent and the pace is spot on.
