This is the first time where I’ve really felt the need to say that this is more of a four and a half star rating. If I had to choose between four and five stars – as you do on most rating systems – then I’d have to label it as a four but its close. It definitely had a few five stars moments and was thoroughly enjoyable on the whole. I also particularly loved the last quarter so, here’s hoping, that the next book in the series will carry on like that.

One thing that I was really looking forward to in Shadowblack was learning more about Ferius and the Argosi which, to some extent, I did. Admittedly I still have questions about the Argosi – some about the past which was mentioned in this novel – but I do feel that I understand what they’re all about a little better, especially Ferius who is a joy to read about. The four opening sections were particularly well written too and gave a good, yet abstract, sense as to what an Argosi was.

There were also some new characters in this book which I found fascinating to learn about. I loved getting to see Kellen and Seneira grow closer as the story progressed and warmed to her quite quickly. ‘Rosie’ was an interesting addition to the novel and I’d love to learn a little bit more about her past with Ferius. Dexan was also an intriguing figure to learn about and had a tendency to surprise me. I hope, in future books, that at least a few of these people will turn up again.
As for the continuing characters from book one they were well developed and continued to keep my attention. Reichis I found particularly fun to read about and I’ve loved getting to see more of him. Seeing him warm to some home comforts was quite entertaining although my favourite scene, with him, probably has to be one that (without saying too much) focuses on his furs ability to change colour.

The story was well written, gripping and had a very interesting plot. I loved all of the twists and turns that were shown throughout the course of the story. It moved in unexpected directions and had some very inventive, and surprising, revelations towards the end.

Overall I definitely enjoyed this story and am looking forward to starting Charmcaster. Like the first book in the series Shadowblack jumped straight into the action and never really slowed down. There were twists and turns around every corner and plenty of funny exchanges thrown into the mix. I can’t wait to read more.
