Lucy is a social media star with a book deal until she is attacked by someone she has met at a coffee bar and has her face cut with a scalpel. This is how the book starts and from there the back story of both Lucy and the attacker whose name we learn is Tyler are told.
It is clear that Tyler intends to destroy Lucy on as many levels as he can and from his story it would appear that he has reason or at least a rational for this. For her part the complexities of Lucy’s identity and past combine to affect her future and how she will recover from the attack. The whole question of identity within social media is raised as is the notion of truth and fact or lie and falsehood and where the dividing line for each is. Lucy’s loneliness and difficulty in forming relationships is also a factor in her story and has been a major driving force in her achieving her social media status and the financial benefits of this. Tyler is a threat to all of this.
This is a complex psychological thriller that builds tension gradually and the plot deepens with each twist. It is not the sort of book that you can get through in a day as to do so would be to miss the nuances of the plot and a well written story.
I really enjoyed this book.
