I liked Caroline as a character, both in the past and the present chapters in the novel. So that would be enough of a hook to get me to read the rest of the novel to find out what happens to her. And also to find out whether my first instinct to like her was correct. There are so many possibilities as to who the girl 'Lili' could be that it makes for an interesting basis for the rest of the story.
