This first impression extract really allows you to identify with the main character by starting off with her in the present, with all her resentment, before flicking back to the past so we can see where the resentment has started to build up. I feel irritated beyond words by her family already after only one chapter of their presence. Because we already identify so much with the main character due to this technique, it intrigues the reader as to how and why the press can have demonised her so much following whatever happened to her child. Likewise, Hunter can't be so perfect as the press has painted him - he completely misinterprets his wife's wishes for their holiday so there is clearly some potential for development in terms of the widening fissure between them. A very exciting first start, but not quite my cup of tea. However, if you're big into your mystery novels that will have you on the edge of your seat, then this is 100% for you.
