This thoughtful book offers a very different view of the Second World War, telling a story that I had never come across before.
The two main characters Connie and Seppe, are quite sympathetic, but I did find the development of their story a little slow moving .
The descriptions of the forest are lovely, and the work undertaken is fascinating and accurate in its terminology. In contrast the inhumanity and cruelty of war seems even harsher when contrasted with this peaceful world of trees.
The themes of the story are very powerful and evocative and I enjoyed the excerpts from the Dean Forest Mercury from a social history persepective , I just wished I could have felt a bit more involved with Connie & Seppe.
