This book, set in the spring of 1944 a year before the end of world war two, Shelter written by Sarah Franklin focuses on the meeting of Connie, a refuge who escaped from her home when it was bombed by German soldiers, and Seepe, an Italian prisoner of war.
This book is what I would personally say is more of a romance book than anything else but it also really focuses on the hope needed to survive when war is all around you. I feel like the main point Sarah Franklin is trying to make with this book is that happiness can be found even in the hardest times.
It is honestly really hard to believe that Shelter is Sarah Franklin's debut novel. She successfully pulls the reader back into the time of world war two by incorporating 40's slang in a really authentic way without it feeling forced or 'fake'.
This book is definitely one you have to take your time with due to its subject matter and the beginning was a bit slow for me but is something I would recommend to friends if they were looking for a different read!
