Riley lives in Shiver Point with her grandad. She is totally immersed in building a robot to help him to manage day-to-day tasks and doesn’t think anything of it when a new scarecrow appears in the field adjacent to her home. When a spate of crime occurs in their town, and a teacher is mysteriously attacked during their group detention, the Shiver Squad resolve to get to the bottom of the bizarre sightings and eerie events.

A tap at Riley’s window one night instils fear and urgency and all clues seem to point to the abandoned Darkraven Farm, where the Baxter family secrets still lurk. Can the Shiver Squad save Shiver Point from the horror they face?

We are easily scared and we were a little worried about reading a horror story, especially when it was dark outside. We needn’t have worried though because Gabriel Dylan has pitched this story perfectly for children age 9-12 (and grown ups with sensitive souls) and there is the perfect mix of spook, scream, scare, fun and enjoyment so that nobody loses any sleep. The tension builds but Dylan skilfully ensures that the story doesn’t turn into a potential nightmare for his young readers. Think Stranger Things rather than Friday 13th!

We loved the exploration of the friendships between the Shiver Squad and the peek into the life of a young carer, the support from her squad and the teamwork to resolve any issues, supernatural or otherwise. This book was a thrilling, easy read and was perfect for readers age 9-12 who like things that go BUMP in the night.
