This is a riveting book for younger readers.

The second book in the series, the friendship circle has already been established. All of the characters are well-written, as are their relationships, and the point-of-view frequently changes between each one. There is an interesting and sympathetic sub-plot involving a young carer.

Although the story is very reminiscent of Goosebumps, I would say that this would suit the younger end of middle-grade readers. It is a light read and the stakes do not feel too high. There is a general sense of foreboding, but it isn’t too frightening. There is a mystery to solve involving a scarecrow and an old farm - very Scooby Doo in spirit.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, when it is released.

I love the map of the small coastal town at the beginning, it helps to get your bearings!
