I'm not 100% sure what age range this book is aimed at, it seemed a bit tame to start with, but it really got going when the action started and I found it quite heart-racing as an adult! The concept is maybe a little old - the 5 kids thrown together had a bit of a 'breakfast club' vibe about it, you had the smart one, the inventive one, the one no one knows, the new one and the troublemaker. Having said that, the story had good pace and likeable characters. I don't normally go for monster/alien stories as I find them unbelievable, but I liked the way this story panned out, especially how the unexpected goings-on weren't just explained away with a perfectly natural occurrence. It's definitely a book for this day and age - one kid had 2 mums, one lived with their grandfather, one had a single parent... It shows inclusivity I suppose but can feel like it's been shoehorned in for the sake of it. The author didn't dwell too much on it though which I suppose normalises it more.
