A timely release considering Halloween is just around the corner and that the bodies of two suspected aliens were recently presented to a Mexican congress hearing, the premise of Shiver Point might be one that Enid Blyton would come up with had she branched out into writing horror or science fiction novels as five seemingly disparate youngsters are brought together by a mysterious falling object.

Place names such as Howlmoor Forest, Chilling Shakes, Night Owl Cinema and the town which gives the book its title are good at capturing the genre, as is the front cover and the tree branch illustrations at the start of a new chapter. Equally, the paragraphs are digestible enough for the target young reader audience, who may also identify with Alex (the central character who, at the start, is your stereotypical outsider yearning to leave Shiver Point and have a better relationship with his hospital night shift worked mother).
