This really could have been such an intriguing novel, what with the stick-in-the-middle-of-nowhere setting and the whodunnit atmosphere but I found that it just did not work for me.

Firstly, the pacing was quite slow, and usually that means that the author has ample time to create such wonderful and vivid characters but Taylor didn’t quite manage that. Instead, I found them rather bland and predictable. The protagonist, Anna, came across as, frankly, a bit silly and unrealistic. There was just something about her that I found myself disliking... a lot.

I think something that hinders this book is that the stakes never really felt high enough. There was not a moment while reading that I found myself worried for the protagonist or that left me on the edge of my seat. Everything just sort of ambled along, in a tidy sort of way that I knew would sort itself out in the end.

Overall, I found Sleep by C.L Taylor to be, in truth, underwhelming.
