Unfortunately I found this excerpt thoroughly irritating. I really disliked Mark and the narrator seemed like a bit of a drip - she knows she's being isolated from her family and friends and is miserable but still goes along with everything this "mysterious" man trots out. It may just have been jumping in at a good way into the book, perhaps there was more of a slow build up that would explain her not kicking him out and getting as far away as she could.
