Promising story but slightly odd writing style

I would probably read this as a holiday book, the expository writing is not bad but the dialogues are very stilted. It's difficult to tell so far how the characters will develop so this may improve as the book goes on. I wasn't hooked but would be willing to give it a chance as I love mystery / thriller books!
