I listened to the audio version of this book (many thanks to Netgalley) and found it to be a completely extraordinary tale and genuinely could have been fictional. I think it is very easy to judge and suggest that Carolyn was foolish and should have seen through him because it does sound like Mark was incredibly convincing. I felt quite sad as I listened because knowing it was a real person who was conned made it all much worse. I don't read tabloids so hadn't actually heard anything much of this case, although the theme of the case rings a dim bell. The narrator of the audiobook was well chosen and easy to listen to. This book serves as a lesson to us all; if it seems too good to be true then it probably is. It's a sad state of the world that people are willing to deceive so that we must be suspicious of strangers; that nothing can really be taken at face value anymore.
