I really like the cover and it would certainly make me pick it up and find out more. This is not an author I've read before but I liked the feel from the few pages I got to read.
I found it almost uncomfortable especially when you know it's a true story. Mark seems to be both rude, obnoxious and charming and the way he made Carolyn feel, especially in front of her family and friends, who he was meeting for the first time was truly awful. I guess making them dislike him and feel awkward is all part of it and will help keep them away and therefore make it easier for him to keep Carolyn embroiled in his web of lies. Not sure how important Paul is to the story and if he knows what is going on or is also being conned by Mark. It seems to take place over a long period of time and go back and forth.
Looking from a readers point of view I think why didn't she question more but hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess. Would be interested enough to read whole book to find out how it ends and more importantly if Carolyn comes out of it ok
