I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy reading this book when I borrowed it from the library. I had read an excerpt before it was published and got the impression that the conman, Mark Acklom, was an obvious and despicable character that anybody with an ounce of common sense could see through. However, having now read Carolyn Woods’ account of how Mark manipulated, isolated and defrauded her of over £800k, I have the utmost sympathy and respect for her. Despite losing all her savings, her work, friends and health because of her relationship with Mark, she is a strong woman who fought hard for justice despite initial reluctance, and indeed resistance, from the police and powers that be. I am full of admiration for Carolyn writing this book and hope it helps anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves in a similar relationship. Mark Acklom is currently in prison but will no doubt be up to his old tricks when he is released in a couple of years time.
