No, this is not like Sally Rooney. Snowflake has more plot, story and a far better writing style. We follow Debbie from rural Ireland, living on a dairy farm commuting into Trinity University, not really fitting in. We see the relationship with her family, her whimsical mother, and her uncle.

There is a mental health theme running throughout as well as dreams. If you liked these themes, I would recommend 'The Beauty of Impossible Things' by Rachel Donohue, also from Dublin. Both are coming of age books which, considering the dream themes, are realistic in a way. It's probably helped by the author's experiences detailed at the back of the book.

I hope there is more from Nealon, on another story or a continuation. I actually preferred Xanthe's character to Debbie, probably because she was introduced as wrongly by Debbie, which is funny. But also Xanthe shows not to judge by covers.
