Debbie lives on a dairy farm with her mother (Maeve) and Billy, her uncles who lives in a caravan on the farm. She is about to embark on her degree at Trinity in Dublin and is filled with pre-university nerves exacerbated by the fact that she usually only visits Dublin once a year to see the Christmas lights. The story follows her first year at college, the friendships she makes and the family events that almost knock her off course.

I enjoyed reading this book and didn’t want it to end. When I read the sample last month on NetGalley, I thought it was a funny, unusual story with a quirky narrator, but as I devoured the whole story I found a darker side to it, dealing with family mental health in a deft and moving way.

I loveed Debbie’s relationship with Billy and how he pushes her out of her comfort zone. The theme of dreams, running throughout the book, adds an otherworldly aspect to the story. The way Nealon deals with mental health problems (both personal and in the family) and access to help will ring true with anyone who has experienced this.

Imagine the writing of Sally Rooney and Naoise Dolan, mixed with the distinct narration of Eleanor Oliphant plus a new and unique voice, and you’ve got Snowflake, an enjoyable, moving, mad and witty novel.
