This was a very moving coming of age tale of Debbie White as she leaves the comfort of her unconventional rural family dairy farm to the city of Dublin to attend Trinity College.
Debbie is socially awkward, incredibly bright and quite naive. As she navigates between her sophisticated new friends and the eccentric bubble at home Debbie begins to unravel. Her mother Maeve is a free spirit who spends her time recording her dreams that she believes are prophecies and her Uncle Billy her father figure lives in a caravan drinking himself to sleep each night under the stars. He is desperate for Debbie to break free of old family cycles and have a different kind of life.
The novel is full of loveable characters and deals really well with mental illness and social anxiety and trying and failing to self medicate. Debbie having her driving lessons was so relatable to me and very funny. Snowflake is a fantastic debut novel, I look forward to reading more by this author.
