Louise Nealon has written a great book here that has a very similar feel to Sally Rooney’s Normal People but actually was better in my opinion. The book follows Debbie as she heads to Trinity College after living at a rural farm in the Irish countryside. She experiences the difficultly of the massive changes involved with the progression to university. She commutes daily, has a mum with mental health problems and has to help out with the farm. The story felt really authentic and it was nice to read a book set about that age round. As a student myself I feel like I read lots of book about secondary school and then there’s a jump to adult life. The problems Debbie experiences are I’m sure very familiar to those of many around me. It was that reminder that not everyone has the same opportunities and not the same experiences as others. This book is so well written and is definitely going to be a big best seller.
