Snowflake by Louise Nealon is an enjoyable read.
The main character Debbie is 18 and just starting at Trinity College in Dublin. She lives at home on a dairy farm with her mum Maeve and Uncle Billy. She comes from a small town where her family are outsiders.
Starting college she meets a fellow student, Xanthe who seems vastly different from her and her life. However as the story progresses similarities in their lives come out.
Debbie has to cope with her mum's mental health suffering especially when her partner dies in a horrific farm accident. Her Uncle Billy who takes care of Debbie and her mother is a complex charaxter who always acts in her best interests. Mix these people in with small town living and dreams coming true and it makes for an unusual story in a normal setting.
I found all the characters well rounded and likeable even with their oddities.
The story drew me in and I enjoyed reading this novel.
