This is a really enjoyable story about family, friendship and growing up with a heartwarming message at its centre.
Snowflake follows 18year old Debbie who has grown up on a dairy farm in Ireland and is taking the big step of starting her further studies at Trinity College in Dublin. We see Debbie's struggle to adapt to life in a bustling city, her social awkwardness and making new friends while still being drawn into the increasingly complicated dramas unfolding with her family back on the farm.
I felt that the two settings and elements to the story were balanced really well and Debbie's naivety was well observed and believable because of how her home life is depicted. The writing is full of good humour to alleviate some of the heavier themes in the book and reinforces the positive message about the importance of family connection and stability.
