I enjoyed this book so much! I read it over four days and I think I would have finished it quicker but I have been so tired lately (I mainly read before sleeping) so it took longer than expected. ‘Snowflake’ is basically about a young girl called Debbie who has started university and is finding it hard to make friends, fortunately she meets a girl called Xanthe who is more outgoing and extroverted. Debbie find it hard to balance her uni and social life with her family life. She lives with her mum Maeve and her uncle Billy. It is a coming-of-age story but it also dives into very important issues such as mental health.
I was very surprised when I found out this was Louise Nealon’s debut novel as she is such a great writer. The book felt very personal and all of the characters where really well developed. Debbie was such a likeable character and you are rooting for her right from the first page. The other characters (Billy, Maeve, Xanthe and some other background characters) were also really well written, you got an insight into their lives and the issues they have faced. They were all really interesting and at the end of the book you are left craving to find out more about everyone.
Overall, I really recommend this book. It had a really good balance of humour and serious topics. It will be interesting to see if Louise Nealon will make this into a series/trilogy/etc as the ending felt quite open and I still think there is much more to learn from Debbie and her family.
