This is a very fresh read about eighteen year old Debbie, who grew up in an unconventional family on a Irish dairy farm, as she steps into the real world when she starts college in Dublin. There are a few main themes in this predominantly growing up and mental health which to be fair in many teenagers do coexist frequently. I’m actually not sure how I feel about this, there’s some really good chapters, some humour and some thought provoking moments but I just didn’t like Debbie. This is told from her perspective and whilst it feels disjointed it works in the context of trawling through her mind but she’s no strength to her character, more plays who she thinks she should be and I actually didn’t think she was nice especially to her so called friend (notices she’s logging the pitiful amount of food she’s eating in her notebook but dies nothing to support her just congratulates herself on realising she has an issue and totally downplays her depression) That said she is struggling herself, she doesn’t have a great life or family support, and I think quite a few younger people will see a lot to relate to in this, 7/10
