Snowflake is about a young woman who lives on a dairy farm in rural Ireland with her mother, her mother's boyfriend and her uncle (who actually lives in a small caravan on the land) she achieves a place in university so at first we read all about her struggles to adapt to being in the city and being around so many different people. She finds her place throughout the book, but we also learn more about the close relationship she has with her uncle, and the unconventional relationship she has with her mother, who has struggled with mental illness her whole life.
She makes a really important friend who she believes is far too cool and clever to want anything to do with her, but the girls soon become very close. We read about struggles with mental illness, manic behaviour, stresses and strains of everyday life and how they become escalated during a tragedy. Throughout it all though, there is a great sense of humour. The main character is very witty, interesting and charms you with her quirky ways.
