The story is told from a 2 point perspective of the lover and employer of a missing maid. The two characters are following the disappearance of the maid whilst attempting to battle their own difficulties, which were made urgent and unavoidable following the disappearance.
The book follows issues of racism and class segregation in Cyprus, through a number of character in different backgrounds and social status.
The story is emotional and thought provoking; leaving the issues prominent and central to the storyline.
The storyline is set over a 3 week period with a series of flashbacks to the past, however this in no way makes the story slow burn, emphasizing the impact of the read as well as giving the sense of time that is necessary to create a bond with the reader.
