I loved The Beekeeper of Aleppo and so I had high hopes for this new novel from Christy Lefteri.

Songbirds is set in Cyprus and tells the story of Nisha through the characters of Petra and Yiannis; Nisha disappears and the novel focuses on their search for her.

I thought this novel was really well written; themes of class, loss, love and motherhood are all intertwined with lots of imagery to create a powerful read. I had to keep reading on as I wanted to know how it would end. The chapters alternate between Petra and Yiannis; this was really effective as the reader was able to get to know Nisha through different perspectives.

I enjoyed this novel and it left me thinking about the characters and their lives afterwards. Upon reflection, the note from the author was really insightful too. I’ll be eager to read the next book from Christy Lefteri!
