This novel is a slow start, but I'm glad I persevered. It's beautifully written, gripping, and explores multiple important themes. It's hard to review without giving away the ending; it's the kind of story that's always building to a crescendo.

The characters are complex and not all likeable, which makes for a richer story. They're well-developed, and I enjoyed how the story unfolds like an onion, with new layers throughout.

The setting was an enjoyable read from a grey England - evocative of sights and smells of Mediterranean shores, giving insights into the lives of people from around the world. Reading a story like this that's completely contemporary is challenging - it helps us question our actions and the impact our lives have on those of others. The story reminds us the extent that comfortable lives are often supported by those who've made immeasurable sacrifice.
