Another fabulous book from Lefteri, she's definitely now an autobuy author for me. Songbirds is another emotional novel but it takes on a slightly more mysterious angle. Nisha works as a nanny for Petra and her daughter in Cyprus, having left her own child in Sri Lanka to find work to provide for her. Nisha suddenly disappears and when the police are not interested, Petra and Yiannis, a poacher who loved Nisha, have no other option but to look into her disappearance themselves.

This was a really quick read for me and it was one of those that compelled me to pick it up again after each time I had to put it down. I liked the mystery aspect that was included in Songbirds as this made it slightly different to The Beekeeper of Aleppo and more addictive. However, I'm not sure whether this actually in turn made it a little harder to connect with the characters as I didn't find myself feeling truly connected right until the end, but in any event the ending hit me hard and I had to grab the tissues so I think I'm being picky. It was a very emotional read and it wasn't always an easy read; it cleverly shows the lengths that people have to go to in order to be able to provide for themselves and their families. I would definitely recommend this book, just prepare yourself for the tears!

Thanks to Zaffre, Manilla Press for a copy of this book.
